When he stated “We have been brought up to believe that Mom needs Valium to sleep and dad needs codeine to feel better.” and “Nowadays, Brother needs Ritalin for hyperactivity and Sister needs Prozac for depression-while their problems go unaddressed and their energies are quelled instead of redirected.”, he was saying that prescription and narcotics like codeine are used by people to avoid their problems and leave all their energies repressed. Also, it was said that “Narcotics and other drugs, however, are illegal and usually associated with society’s outsiders.” That is not true at all, because in society today, it is known that addiction to drugs of any kind does not know race, gender, age, social class, or handicap. When I first read this essay, I thought I completely agreed with everything that Garvey wrote. However, after reading it over several times I realized that I did not agree with one of his statements. The one I disagreed with was the one he made about the history of marijuana and how it came to be criminalized. I felt like he was saying, in not so many words, that marijuana should have never been made into something criminal...
