This is important to the overall plot because Prometheus knows he is breaking one of his society’s laws, a recurring theme we see throughout the novel. In this insane society, Prometheus is probably one of the only ones, if not the only one, that would actually go down there. This is just one example of him breaking laws in his society. In Quote B Prometheus is disagreeing with his society’s laws again. In Prometheus’s society, one must love their brothers and everything one does must be for the good of his brothers. Even if two men did not know each other, they were expected to treat each other like brothers. Prometheus here is saying that he will not love a man he does not know, which is similar to our society today. Before, all someone had to do to be loved by his brothers was be born. Prometheus is showing a level of maturity unprecedented in his society by asking how he could love a person when he has never met him. This is another example of Prometheus defying the law. This is a very important theme, because Prometheus knows much more than anyone else in his society and is much more mature and in reality his thoughts of what should be allowed would be much more accepted than that of his society. Quote C is after Prometheus had escaped his town and headed into the forest which was forbidden for anyone to enter. He had reached a house and realized that he was free. When questioning what freedom really was, he concluded that for a man to be free he must be free from his brothers. Basically, what he is saying is that a man is always free, unless other men take that freedom away from him. The only way a man can be free is if he is not told to do by other men.
