The Pro-Choice social movement
...and 1960s several published articles appeared that suggested needed reforms to the abortion laws and this began public attention on this issue. Later this led into Roe vs. Wade, the supreme court case that made it clear that you have the choice to have an abortion or not. The participants for this kind of movement are people of all race and class, abortion as an option for women affects everyone. Even if the woman is the only one having an abortion, it still has an impact on the relationship between the woman and whoever she is with. Men are affected by abortion in that it is an option even if it is one that is a heavy moral decision. Men are generally beneficiaries to the pro-choice movement, leaning a little toward being free riders. The reason I say leaning toward free riding is that even though they don’t have to bear any burden physically they still have help with the decision morally. Women are adherents to the pro-choice movement. They directly benefit from the freedom to choose whether to have an abortion or not. Although if they do choose to have an abortion they have to shoulder the physical burden of it. The interesting thing about the pro-choice movement is that both Men and Women of all races and class can be antagonists too. The movement is based on something every gender, race and class has to deal with, that being parenting. As antagonists they are a counter movement force, trying to outlaw the freedom of choosing whether or not to have an abortion. The only bystanders in this movement are children who have already been born who are involved with the families that are making these sorts of decisions. Depending on your religion some people would say the fetus is a bystander, but we have no real way of proving that so it’s a moot point. If I were the key leader behind the pro-choice movement I would start a mix of all three strategies. To counter the pushes of the pro-life movement, we would learn where they're applying the power strategy and meet them with non-violent picketing protests. The non-violence is the key, although that doesn’t mean the picketers can’t “annoy” or pester the pro-life protestors. If they can be incited to violence it would debunk their entire platform of pro-life. It would also give us great material to give to the media showing the "real" values of the pro-life movement. I would use a mix of the reductive and persuasive strategies and inform people of the statistics of mothers that while abortion was illegal went to back alley clinics where they would get substandard service. I would also use the reductive strategy to talk about the freedom of pro-choice. The platform would be that pro-life people can join with the pro-choice movement in that it's your choice whether you have an abortion or not. I would also use the persuasive strategy to argue that the men in Washington are trying to control the rights of women. The way I would get the word out is create a website, as lik...
