Mushah was the only person that spends most of the money she earned on herself. The rest of the family would give their earnings to the father without a though in their minds. This was the ways of the old country, the family members was not to question the father. As the family grew up and were able to receive more income, the mother had a sense of joy. She no longer had to begged and pleaded for groceries. They were able to have some of the nice things that other people have like toothbrushes and towels. The mother believes in the father’s teachings but soon after living in America for quite a while, she started to argued about things she would not before. She tells the father to go get a paying job and support the family. A part of her is conforming to the ways of the new culture. Soon, Sara’s sisters started finding men that they were interested in. Although they were truly in love, they did not get the approval of their father. In their old culture, the father knows and arranges who their daughter will marry. Instead, their father scared them off and believed that he was the only person that can find his daughters their righteous man. After Sara saw the way her father treated the men and her sisters, she was not was in agreement with her father’s decisions anymore. Soon, the father became a matchmaker and arranged marriages for the all her daughters except Sara. One by one they were sent off and each time the father had a commission for the service he provided by selling off his own daughters. Sara could no longer take the abuse that her father has taken upon them and ran away from home. She no longer wanted the life that her father has provided. She was rebelled against a life ruled by the power of the man which is her father. So she went off to set a life of her own. At first she went to her sister’s for help since they already have a rich American lifestyle but to her surprise they did not live a grand lifestyle as she thought. She got a place of her own and found an ironing job. She set out with a dream to make something of herself and show her family back home that she does not need a man to be successful. She lived in a small space; she goes to work and goes to class at night. People will talk about her at work and in class; she was not like other normal girls. She was a student who had many questions and was not afraid to ask them. Soon after people started to make comments about her which made her really uncomfortable which is why she even tried to be like the other girls. She found out that trying to be something that she is not made her even more uncomfortable. So she set out on her goal on becoming a school teacher and didn’t look back. She wanted a life that was not force on to her like, her other sister were forced. It was not a lifestyle she wanted; she was in need of an American lifestyle. Sara’s hard work at school was driven by her determination for a better life that is not control by her father. She wanted to find a man for herself, and even had a crush on the professor. As her interest grew in education and as she understood more about each subject the timed passed her by. When graduation came, she entered an essay contest and to her surprise she won it. She felt the pride like the first earning she made for selling herring. She did it on her own and was now able to look back on her accomplishments. She can now put her head high and stand on top of all the people that criticized her. She has made it and was living the lifestyle that she had wanted. She had the money to buy the newest and best clothes, a new place to live in and the financially freedom to buy anything she wants.
