He didn’t know what he was getting into. It doesn’t matter what clothes you wear, as long as your different, you will be treated unfairly. Earnest didn’t know how many white people hated blacks and so he used the quote he made up to tell himself that it will all turn out well the next day. 3. When Melba came home from school after one of the worst days yet, her grandmother told her, “Embarrassment is not a life threatening problem. It can be washed away with a prayer and a smile.”. What does this mean? This quote means that all you have to do to forget embarrassment is smile and move on. This was good advice for Melba and all of the members of the Little Rock Nine.
