Fight or Flight
... or flight response” maybe automatic, but that does not mean that people cannot see signs of the response happening. There are many signs that can make people aware of the “fight or flight response” taking form. One is if a person’s pupils begin to dilate. Another sign is impulses quickening. Also, when the response is activated humans start to perceive everything as a possible threat. They begin to search the environment for the “enemy.” Some other signs of the response are sight becoming sharp and the perception of pain goes away. Humans also overreact to the slightest comments when the response is activated. There is a reason for the “fight or flight response.” The “fight or flight response” is meant to protect people. Back in the stone age the response was needed to protect humans from predators such as the sabertooth tiger. These were times where the actual physical survival was threatened and there was no greater response to have on the human side. The “fight or flight response” gives people a surge of adrenaline. This adrenaline gives them courage and heroism to defend and protect the lives and values they cherish. In modern day, sabertooth tigers take forms in arguments, rush hour traffic, and missing deadlines. Although, these do not have a threat on the physical survival of a human, they do activate the response. The response is invaluable when physical survival is in trouble, but what about modern day sabertooths? The “fight or flight response” can be debated if it is counterproductive or not. In cases today, humans cannot just run from perceived threats. For example, in traffic people have to sit there and deal with it. Modern day stresses can fully trigger the response, leading to aggressiveness, hyper vigilance, and over reactiveness. These three things can make people respond in ways harmful to their survival. Like if a person was to get angry at their boss, both punching and running away would only be counterproductive to their physical survival. Since the “fight or flight response” can be harmful to people there are ways for them to prevent it. There are a couple different ways of stopping the “fight or flight response” from going too far.
