These statements show Sammy’s immaturity. Sammy refers to one of the girls as Queen. He calls her Queen because she seemed to be the leader of them. Sammy watches the girls as they go down each isle. At one point, his friend Stokesie said “Oh Daddy, I feel so faint” and then Sammy said “Darling, hold me tight” (334). It seems now that he is making them out as pretty, while just a minute ago he called them chunky and said one had a bunched up face. When the girls come to Sammy’s register to pay for the item that she bought, she pulls out a dollar from the middle part of her top portion of her bathing suit. Sammy says “The jar went heavy in my hand. Really I thought that was so cute” (335). It is as if he has never saw a pretty girl before or either their regular customers are just ugly or old. During the Middle of the story, Sammy seems to grow up a little, after seeing how Lengel treats the girls. His words and actions appear to make this statement true. Sammy refers to this part of the story as sad. The first thing Lengel says to the girls is “Girls this is not a beach” (335). This causes queenie to blush and Sammy said that Lengel gave the girls a sad Sunday-School-Superintendent stare. Queenie tells Lengel that all they did was come into the store for one item and that they are dressed decently. Lengel continued on downing the girls even when customers started to gather at the checkout lines. Sammy did not like Lengel doing this because it embarrassed the girls. At the end of the story, Sammy seems to mature and stands up for what he believes is wrong. He believes that Lengel is unfair to the girls and also does not like how Lengel embarrassed the girls. Sammy thinks the girls are in a hurry to leave because of Lengel and he has not even had a chance to talk to them. After giving the girl her change she quickly leaves, and Sammy tells Lengel, “I quit” (336). When Sammy says this Lengel pretends like he does not understand him forcing him to reconsider. Sammy still decides to quit. Sammy gives Lengel his apron. Lengel is surprised and says “you do not want to do this to your mom ...
