So why do we limit students choices when inside school walls. Varity should always be set up for children to take, whether it be a book list to choose from for a reading assignment or a style of teaching that works best for them to learn. We give students the choice of what they want for lunch but why do we tell them what books they have to read. If a specific assignment has to be given it would be beneficial to let that student choose how to display their knowledge of the topic. This is where I feel the multiple intelligences come to play an important role in the quality world. A student who is assigned to read Moby Dick should not be told to read the book and write a 500-word summary of the book. Not all students learn best by this method. They should have the option to draw, write, act out or display their knowledge of the book that best fits way they feel comfortable in doing. A Cooperative and collaborative approach to understanding learning styles would make the quality world better for both teachers and their students. Applying what a child knows to learning can eliminate having to use coercion. If a child is motivated enough you shouldn’t have to force them to learn, they will want know more and more. Instead of punishing a child immediately for not completing homework assignments a teacher could use positive reinforcement to explain why homework assignments are important. Scaffolding for success, pointing out accomplishments instead of flaws will be beneficial for student learning. If a child is set up for success they will never have that fear of being dumb or singled out.
