When the amount of work we put into something is not determinate of the amount we get out of it, something within us is taken away. And that is motivation, motivation to achieve or to excel in whatever it is we are doing. When the communist worker knows he is getting the same money as his coworker even if he doesn’t work as hard, then naturally he won’t work as hard. People will capitalize and take advantage of any system if it is possible. Although this example may seem unrelated it is the facts about human nature that will always be the same. Any program whether it be welfare or a homeless shelter will be exploited and taken advantage of. When people see the chance to be handed something without working for it, they will take it. If people in poverty are handed everything they need to survive, they don’t see a problem with poverty. If they are living on the streets but are still finding a homeless shelter to sleep in and get a meal when they need one, they will continue to live on the streets because they can still survive. Yes the government could pay everyone’s way, and help each person out when they are down in the dumps, but if the government did this they would run out of money. Taxes would be too high, and in the end poverty would not be fixed. Also if the government takes everybody below the poverty line and pays their way, hardworking taxpayers would not stand by while the poor lived off their backs. Also too many people would depend on the government’s assistance and there would be no motive to even try to work. Sweden is long upheld as a positive example of state run social programs to reduce poverty and disparity and is recently moving towards reduced social programs because of high taxes and huge deficits. Others argue that the less fortunate need to be taken care of. As compassionate humans, we find the need to care for the less fortunate. If you see someone fall down, your first reaction is to help them up. Some might think that without complete government help we are being harsh towards the less fortunate, but this doesn’t mean that citizens can not lend a helping hand. Governments should protect those who can’t protect themselves, the emotionally, mentally, physically disabled. Governments should be a helping hand to bring a person to a place of self reliance through education and training programs. But it should be a temporary hand up not a “hand out.” Yes, but if the government supports the less...
