... to nearly everyone. How many junior high and highschool students have ever heard the word abstinence? And how is Hollywood effecting our youth? No sex is safe sex. Outside of marriage, sex is both physically and emotionally dangerous. Two long-term effects of sex are contracting a sexually transmitted disease and becoming pregnant. In the nineties, the United States had more STDs, teen pregnancies, and abortions than any country in the world. In 1999, 21% of all abortions and 6% of all births occurred to girls under the age of nineteen. Teen pregnancies can rip families apart; for example, causing permanent division between a daughter and mother. Furthermore, media influences portray sex as glamorous, and have made it casual and common for young boyfriends and girlfriends. Relationships built around sex convey a false sense of feeling loved, creating a trap for lustful teens, that can even lead to abuse. Girls feel self-confident and often believe having sex is necessary to remain in a relationship. Sex and sex appeal is so casual and common it causes superficial ideas in young minds. Sex appeal in advertising provokes a high emphasis on looks. Younger and younger girls are enchanted by clothes, makeup, and dieting. Every year, a younger generation of girls becomes obsessed with their appearance, growing up entirely too fast.
