Long term drug use is extremely expensive. A lot of crime is committed to pay for drugs like heroin and crack. Heroin and cocaine addicts need between $10000 and $40000 a year to pay for drugs. The cost to victims of drug related crime is over 2.5 billion per year. In one area, over 3 months, in 1997, seven hundred heroin addicts committed 70 000 criminal offences. Why do people take drugs?? There are many different reasons why people experiment with drugs and many reasons why they continue or stop. It may be because of pier pressure or hearing that they are fun, or older people telling you of the pleasurable effects of doing drugs. When drug taking becomes a regular habit, the body and mind are being constantly interfered with. This can cause depression, anxiety and nervousness. And eating and sleeping patterns are disturbed. Another concern about drugs is the addiction side of things. A drug addict suffers a desperate and uncontrollable craving and feels deeply anxious and physically ill without the drug. Drug prevention and drug education are a part of a curriculum in schools. The need for young people to be informed about the risks of drugs is now widely accepted.
