...he two. A Republic is representative government ruled by law, per the Constitution. A democracy is direct government ruled by the majority, which would be mob rule. A Republic recognizes the rights of individuals while democracies are only concerned with group wants or needs. Democracies have many dangers if not handled properly. One hazard is that Democracies always self-destruct when the non-productive majority realizes that it can vote itself handouts from the productive minority by electing the candidate. This will promise the most benefits from the public treasury. Many people today think that the founders created a democracy, which is no where near the truth. One of the main founders James Madison warned us of a democracy with his words from Federalists paper #10. "Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.” A republic avoids the dangerous extreme of either tyranny and is now the “standard form” of government throughout the world. In federalist paper #10 it focuses in on factions, and how they can be very dangerous to a republic. The founders created the new constitution with the thought of a more balanced government.
