At the request of a fellow friend, Louis Pasteur began to study why alcoholic beverages became contaminated through the process of fermentation. He came to the conclusion that undesirable substances were the cause of the problem. Through the discovery of anaerobic life forms, Pasteur paved the way for studies against germs that cause gangrene and other infections. Through his knowledge of fermentation, Pasteur was able to conclude that unwanted microorganisms were the cause of various diseases.
