Hydropower has many advantages such as its renewable, it’s readily available if more energy is needed, and it causes no pollution. But many disadvantages lead to the production of alternative energy, these disadvantages is that the tail water, which built up overtime, could flood and kill local habitat and the species that live there. One of the commonly used alternative energy is Solar Energy. Solar energy is the process of converting sunlight into power, Solar cells is often used on calculator, but never to power something larger, like a car or stop lights. Solar energy seem like the perfect alternative sources it doesn’t produces any greenhouse gases, sunlight is an renewable sources and inexhaustible, it require little maintenances, and is a perfect way to power remote places which power line can’t get to. But somehow did not catch on. Solar power panel is made up of material call photovoltaic cells or modules, which could convert sunlight straight to energy. Photovoltaic is made up of material called semiconductor, such as an impurities form of silicon, when light is absorb it hit the semiconductor and knock electron allowing them to move freely, the electron can be obtained as energy by placing one metal wire on top and one on the bottom of the photovoltaic cell. Why is the semiconductor made up of an impurities form of silicon and not pure silicon one’s would ask? Pure silicon is never used because they would share electron equally forming a crystalline structure, with no free electron, so it’s harder for light to knock off electron from it bond. But when silicon is mixed with phosphorus at a ratio of one phosphorus to one million silicon, what happen is four valence electron of the silicon would bond with four of phosphorus leaving one loose, this free electron can be easily knock off by light, and the electron become carrier of electrical current. The silicon just describe is a N-type silicon, and the photovoltaic require another silicon called a P-type to work. A P-type silicon is silicon mixed with boron, boron when mixed with silicon form a bond with seven electron, so there is room for one more electron.
