Knowledge became wider and more complex all the time. When one becomes educated in a particular area it gives them power. They can then turn that knowledge into something productive and beneficial in their lives. The heart of old monasteries, universities and law offices was always the library. The many thousand books contained in these represented immense assets. Knowledge which was passed on by word of mouth was written down for posterity on stones, metal slates, animal skins and papyrus; later it was written down on paper, wound into rolls or bound between covers.
