Frost uses brilliant description in both poems to discuss the world surrounding him. In “The Road Not Taken”, the woods and the two proverbial roads are given almost human qualities. The same is true for the speaker’s only companion in the woods in “Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening”, the horse. The snow in the same poem also seems to have a human quality and power. The imagery found in Frost’s two poems, “The Road Not Taken” and “Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening”, follows the imagery first used by the Romantic poets. In both poems, both author and reader are forced to see things with the mind and to use imagination to determine the meaning of the work. In “The Road Not Taken”, Frost paints a clear and vivid picture of his surroundings. He describes the two roads in such detail that the reader can actually stand at the crossroads with the speaker and feel the effects of nature and his impending decision. In “Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening”, the reader is put into the same position of being able to use the imagery set forth by the author, along with their own imagination, as a form of transportation into the wintry setting being described in the poem. Like the Romantic poets, Frost is using imagery as a means of connecting his reader with the poetry. Frost poems also have another important quality in common with his Romantic predecessors – the individualized perception of the individual readers.
