It was found in Egyptian tombs which date from around the 1500s B.C. By 500 B.C. it was used to make amalgams with other metals. The ancient Greeks used mercury in ointments, and the Romans used it for cosmetics. In the 18th and 19th centuries, mercury nirate was used to remove fur from animal skins. With this fur, felt hats were made. This caused many cases of brain damage. Mercury is the color of silver-white. It is kind of like lead, but then again it`s liquid. Since the density of this element is 13.6, it is very heavy. So, literally even the heaviest objects you can think of can float on it; such as bricks, cannon balls, and also lumps of iron or lead.
