Not only do the citizens loose happiness, they loose the feeling of their own emotions. Sadness, anger, or depression never has to be experienced because one pill can make all these unpleasant feelings disappear. In the New World, there is no need to feel anything but happy because The citizens of the new world are given many substitutions for true happiness. They are bombarded with the use of soma to control their emotions. Soma is used to create a sense of constant happiness. Mustapha Mond eloquently explains the wonders of soma: There’s always soma to calm your anger, to reconcile you with your enemies, to make you patient and long-suffering. In the past you could only accomplish these things by making a great effort and after years of hard moral training. Now you swallow two or three half gramme tablets, and there you are. Anybody can be virtuous now. You can carry at least half your morality about in a bottle. Christianity without tears – that’s what soma is (238). Sex also plays a large part in the producing false happiness in the individuals of the new world. From public “orgy-porgies” to frequent one-night stands, sex is just a pleasure tool. There is no love involved. Sex is used just as a means of physical pleasure and self-gratification. There is no knowledge of abuse of these or any substitution for happiness, and these vices are pushed and heavily promoted by the controllers of the new world. Alienation in Brave New World is seen by the characters as a curse. Three characters in Brave New World are alienated from society, Bernard Marx, Helmholtz Watson, and John the Savage, each for their own reason whether it is a physical or mental deformity or a former lifestyle. They are also all alienated for another reason. They all have some grasp of the truth the new world seeks to hide and knowledge that personal freedom is the basis of true happiness. John the Savage realizes that happiness lies in the right to make one’s own choices in his conversation with Mustapha Mond: All right then I’m claiming the right to be unhappy.
