A juncture of three to four years in a residency program is required to obtain a medical license. Often times, a doctor, before starting out on his own, is responsible for working under the guidance of an all ready board certified physician, in Ophthalmology. Once all of the above have been completed, and formal documents have been obtained, the Ophthalmologist to be is responsible for obtaining certification from the American Board of Ophthalmology. Once a license is gained and the aspiring physician is now a board certified Ophthalmologist, the doctor must continue to learn new and improved methods for procedures. With constant advances in technology, Ophthalmologists must remain up to date on the latest equipment and procedures to avoid any complications. This means constant CME (Continued Medical Examinations) yearly to ensure patient health. As with most occupations, Ophthalmology, all though hard work offers generous benefits. Primarily, there is the satisfaction of helping a person who is unable to help themself. For example, a man has glaucoma, a disorder of the eye, in which, left unsupervised results in blindness; an Ophthalmologist, has the ability to diagnosis and treat this patient so that the end result is not blindness, allowing not only the patient satisfaction but the physician as well.
