Living on the island is not as much fun as they thought, and most of the boys are ready to go home. They want to be rescued, so they start a signal fire with Piggy’s glasses. Due to more fighting and inattention to the fire, the fire on top of the mountain begins to burn out of control. Piggy criticizes the boys for being immature and irresponsible when he says, "How can you expect to be rescued if you don’t put first things first and act proper?" He is trying to tell the boys that they were not raised like animals, and that if they want to be rescued, they need to follow the rules that they have been taught in order to survive and succeed. Life on the island gets worse and worse. The boys are becoming more savage and dangerous towards each other. Simon is a good boy who has not turned selfish and cruel. He decides to confront the Beast (Lord of the Flies) in his vision. The Beast says to Simon, “Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill! You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you? Close, close, close! I’m the reason why it’s no go? Why things are the way they are?” The Beast backs up what Simon already thought – evil (Satan) naturally exists in all humans (the boys).
