... 1953. In 1954 King accepted the pastoral position at Dexter Avenue Baptist church in Montgomery Alabama. King’s pursuit for equality started early in life. Always a strong worker for civil rights he was a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He accepted the leadership of the first great Negro non violent demonstration of contemporary times in the United States. He traveled six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times. He wrote five books as well as numerous articles. He was arrested twenty-five times and, assaulted at least four times. King was awarded five honorary degrees and, was named man of the year by time magazine. He was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Prize. Martin Luther King Jr. also turned his efforts to African American voting rights. He planned the drive in Alabama for the registration of Negro voters. He directed the peace march where he gave his famous speech “I have a dream” to 250,000 Americans. Which is known as one of the most powerful speeches in history. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. He was standing on the balcony of his motel room in Memphis Tennessee, where he was to lead a protest march for poorly paid garbage workers.
