Owen as Jesus
...d that “God has taken my hands [and that he was] God’s instrument” (337). Owen holds a very deep faith throughout the novel. Regardless of what obstacle he may face he believes it is part of God’s plan; that in the grand scheme of things, everything will have worked out. This attitude demonstrates that he very well may be the second coming of Christ because of this blind faith. It is as though he knows the truth of his birth even before his parents inform him of it which allows him to hold such a high regard toward his beliefs. Supernatural visions are mostly just chalked up to the subconscious of oneself. Most do not take any sort of premonition seriously, however, Owen Meany does. Owen is a firm believer in predestination; everything occurs for a reason. When he begins to have supernatural dreams and visions it is a strong indication that Owen has some sort of contact with God. He begins to dream of his own death where he sees his own grave with the inscription “1LT Paul O. Meany Jr. ...[he] believed he knew when he was going to die; he also believed he knew his rank—he would die a first lieutenant” (pg. 415). His dream had come long before he had even signed up for the army, even before he went to college for the ROTC. Owen’s death had been predetermined and he had seen when it was going to take place; just like how Jesus knew he would die a martyr, Owen knew he would die a hero. His fate was already determined and through his dreams he was able to see that as well as how his relationship with God was changing; he truly was like Christ. Owen’s death is cause for speculation. Throughout the novel the boys work on a move known as “the Shot” where John lifts Owen above his head so he can make a slam-dunk. “The Shot” becomes a pivotal part of Owen’s death. As Owen and John were reunited in Florida, the time had come for Owen to be a hero. He was convinced that his death would be to save Vietnamese children and in the airport where Vietnamese orphans are getting off a plane, a grenade is launched and John catches it and Owen...
