...s past when he saw his mother naked and being sexually aroused. When Freud first published his works on the Oedipus complex it was not so welcome into society. People were shocked to know that young children had sexuality. It was later accepted as a valid theory by Freudians. One would think that the Oedipus complex is just gibberish, and some psychologists accept the theory as being invalid and plain nonsense. (Colorado) A few years later Carl Gustav Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist claimed that young girls can also suffer from the Oedipus complex. Just like Freud’s reasoning his reasoning came from an ancient Greek myth, the myth of Electra a Greek princess, who murdered her mother and married her father. (New Age) This sage of sexual development is known as the Electra complex. The girl forms a sexual desire for her father, and ignores her mother and ignores the strong bond between mother and daughter. The Electra complex differs just a bit from the Oedipus complex; the woman develops hate for her mother, during her process of development. During this process the girl is very attached to her mother, however the discovery of the absence of a penis the child becomes angry at the mother, because she holds her responsible. She then turns her attachment to her father and imagines an intimate relationship with him and that she will become pregnant by him. The girl then believes that the pregnancy will replace here missing penis, and will bring her up to status with her father. This seems like it is just nonsense as to how a girl would have penis envy, but like Freud’s theory Jung’s is said to be nonsense. (Wikipedia) In Freud’s work with the Oedipus complex he states that children have “erotgenic zones” the oral zone, the anal zone, and the phallic zone. These zones are a big part of the major stages of childhood development. They take place between the ages of 2 to 5. Freud says that the oral stage begins soon after birth, when the child first experiences nursing. The anal stage is said to be associated with toilet training. The phallic stage is the most important part of these stages this is the stage that leads to masturbation, which leads to adult sexuality. This is one the very few of Freud’s theories that make sense to me it could be true, but yet his theory is ignored by modern psychologists (Colorado) According to Freud’s work the way that that a child resolves the Oedipus complex determines the child’s ability to have sexual relations with both men and women. Victims of a negative outcome of the Oedipus complex may become lazy adults who are abusive and may become victims of h...
