Then the animals would not have to use every ounce of their remaining stamina to rebuild the windmill again and again. The animals are effortlessly intimidated by the pigs. The pigs would not have started running the place if someone like Boxer, a cart horse, had taken over. The animals were too terrified of the pigs to try and let somebody like the cart horse manage the farm. Also, if the mother dog had tried harder to protect her puppies, they would not have been abducted and trained as Napoleon's private muscle. Lastly, the animals would not be in such a bad position if they were confident enough to realize that Squealer was lying to them about the changing commandments. For example, when commandment four changed from, “No animal shall sleep in a bed” to “No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets,” Clover, an unsuspecting loyalist to Napoleon, is confused, but then simply thinks that everything is entirely fine. Clover accepts the new commandment and believes that everything is satisfactory, because she is naive and too trusting of the pigs' authority.
