The body needs a certain amount of water to function properly, but when a person vomits so often the body does not get to absorb the water nor the nutrients it needs, thus causing dehydration. The dehydration, in turn causes constipation, which finally causes hemorrhoids. Sometimes extreme bulimia results in death. Some symptoms of bulimia are more obvious than others. Binge eating is a symptom of all bulimic persons. Most also choose a way to not gain weight, usually by laxative or self-induced vomiting. This may not be as obvious though since people cover up noise by letting the water run while in the bathroom, or staying in the bathroom for prolonged times. Many bulimics have an overachieving behavior, are perfectionists, or are obsessed with physical image. Because of their peeve for perfectionism, they turn to bulimia as a way to appear healthy and maintain a “perfect” figure. A bulimic usually appears to be of normal weight, unless their bulimia is paired with anorexia, which then they tend to have a low body weight. Another thing to be conscience of is over activity, frequently weighing themselves, or unusual eating habits. Bulimia doesn’t specifically target a certain type of person, but it does tend to occur most often in teenaged females. The exact cause of bulimia is unknown, but it is closely tied with family problems, perfectionist personalities, and an overemphasis on physical appearance. It may also be associated with depression. But it can be prevented, or reduced, by less focus and emphasis on physical appearance. Bulimia can be treated various ways. First, there can be a change made in a person’s everyday habits that would thus change the binge eating cycle.
