The Unknown Island

When the king saw the man he asked him what he wanted following with several other questions, but the man only replied with “give me a boat (8).” The Uhlfelder, 2 man used his persistence and jumped to the chase by demanding exactly what he came for. The king questioned the man again “and who are you that I should give you a boat,” the man replied with “and who are you to refuse me one (12)?” Even though the king is of higher authority the man does not respect him and continues with his forceful and demanding approach to get what he wants. When the king asks why he needs the boat the man simply replies with “to go in search of the unknown island (11).” The king does not believe that the man will find the unknown island merely because it is not on the map. The man faithfully says, “simply because there can’t possibly not be an unknown island (12).” The man has complete faith that he will be able to find the unknown island because he knows there are islands that are not yet found. The king is sure that the man will need a crew to assist him on his journey. The man is faithful in himself that he can to do it on his own by saying “thank you lord, as don’t worry, I will manage (14).” The cleaning woman sees that the man has complete faith in himself and decides to be a part of his crew. The king sends the man to the harbor to claim his boat for the journey. The king, as well as the harbormaster believes that there are no unknown islands left and they all are found and known. The harbormaster also asks the man why he needs the boat the man replies, “it’s odd that you, a man of the sea, should say to me that there are no unknown islands left (21).” The man being as faithful as he is, questioned the harbor master because he is a man of the sea and should know that there are things out there that have yet to be discovered. The man shows faith in finding the island because he states, “I want to find the unknown island, I Uhlfelder, 3 want to find out who I am when I’m there on that island (31).” Everyone doubting the man made his faith stronger. While the man is out on his journey his imagination starts to take over. The man began to dream about his travels at sea. He dreamed that “his caravel was on the highest seas, with the three lateen sails gloriously full, cutting a path through the waves, while he controlled the ship’s wheel and the crew rested in the shade (42).” In his imagination he saw a crew that also wanted to be part of finding the unknown island. Also in the man’s dream he could see “animals wondering the deck too, ducks rabbits, chickens and the usual domestic livestock pecking at the ...
