...rship. In 1767 Thomas Mifflin was wed to Sarah Morris. The partnership between Mifflin and his brother was successful, but politics is what truly attracted him. Mifflin was talented with words and this drew his attention into the political realm. His first encounter with politics was his election in 1772 to the provincial assembly. He then became recognized as a champion of Colonial rights. He grew popularity and became one of the youngest and most radical members of the First Continental Congress, and was elected once again for the Second Continental Congress. The Revolutionary war had barely begun and after the battle of Lexington, Mifflin quickly turned his attention to the Continental Army and their training. He was then appointed as major in 1775. Some believed that Mifflin deserved better than Major. In fact John Adams declared that he, “ought to have been general.” It was on June 23, 1775 that Mifflin would be appointed as General to George Washington’s aide-de-camp, and on August 14, 1775 selected as the Continental Army’s first Quartermaster General. He gained military power and was well known for his faithfulness and efficiency. He took part in various battles such as: the Battle of Long Island, Trenton, Princeton, and the battle of Furthermore. And like any politician with a good sense of persuasion, his talent as a speaker convinced many to stay in the military service.
