...s. It came around a time of a high death rate. The realistic fiction at the time dealt with children dying, but ascending to the heavens and a peaceful manner. This would work like a sedative to those that were experiencing death in their families. It would make it seem like death was not so bad. In Early England, the rags to riches stories were becoming more popular. This again teased the psyche of the poor, because it made them dream of the riches that at the time had escaped them. Whether puritan or British, the key to writing a good realistic fiction story lies in the character. “And indeed, people are the heart of fiction. There are no plots without characters to act them out, and the most important element of story is characterization.”(Riverside) This almost goes without saying. It is through the character the reader must find refuge. When one first opens a novel in almost every occasion, the first 2 person you encounter is the main character. You are in the first introductory passages able to meet and learn about the character responsible for your voyage through the book this is a tough task for any main character. Think about it, in most cases they are ultimately responsible for how you finally feel about the book. In the short story Dear Mr. Henshaw lies the perfect example of realistic fiction. A young boy writes his favorite author with questions, and gets a surprise, when the author responds back with some questions of his own. It is a wonderful tale of youthful innocence and adult sarcasm. The author to this story is an adult, writing like a child. The author must mentally place themselves into the mind of the child in the story, and attempt to write like a child would talk. The author Beverly Cleary, does a wonderful job, because her act is believable. Story is a real possibility and over time one actually believes that a real child wrote those letters. It is a great example of realistic fiction because it allows the reader to remember, and become child-like once again The Island of the Blue Dolphins, is the story of a family on the island Ghalat-at. They witness the arrival of visitor, which grows to be hostile, and the father the chief is killed. The eventually learn to be self-reliant and eventually encounter more visitors. This time the daughter who is called Karana is rescued but when she finds that her brother Ramu is still on the island, she jumps off, to be by his side. The Ramu is later killed by ...
