Again Oedipus believes a quick decision is necessary for a deep subject. Laius’ death being of grave importance at the time, Oedipus tells Creon that, “Swift thinking must step into parry…” (pg 47). This indication shows Oedipus’ impatience. Because of his quick thinking mentality, Oedipus believes that the sooner a problem is solved, the less chance there is of it expanding. But with less time to analyze someone can easily make a mistake. Creon on the other hand has other qualities different from Oedipus that can also make a good leader. Oedipus who did well in ruling Thebes does not have all the fine characteristics of being a leader. Creon does have what Oedipus needs to be a great king. When it was concluded that Oedipus was guilty, Creon displayed his forgiveness to him by not thinking rashly and killing him when Oedipus requested to be “banished.” But Creon “does not mean (what he does) not say,” (pg 82). Instead of coming to a conclusion of ending Oedipus’ life, Creon knew ending his days would not solve any problem of Laius’ death. He forgives Oedipus. If Creon were punishing his soldiers for disobeying him and decided to kill them, he would have a lowered morale in his army, especially if they all did common minor mistakes in following orders. During their argument Creon believes, “A mind at peace does not engender wars,” (pr 47). Unlike Oedipus Creon thinks of the consequences of speaking quickly because it may not always be the right answer. Oedipus is an angry person who says things without knowing the concrete facts which makes them both very different.
