The second question that was talked about in class was “How do we respond to stress.” In this part of the class there were two main stresses, the first was acute stress. Acute stress focused on fight or flight. Fight or flight is a way to see how a person deals with stress. For instance fight is a person that goes right with the stress, and chooses to deal with the stress. Flight would be a person who instead of fight the stress they choose to distance themselves from it. The second type of stress is chronic stress. Chronic stress can be seen in three different ways which would be alarm, resistance, and exhaustion. If the person’s stress is alarming they often can provide tremendous strength. Resistance stress is basically how it sounds the body resists the stress by struggling with the problem, but the stress is unnoticeable. The final part of chronic stress is exhaustion. This part of stress has a major impact on the body, and you can usually see the exhaustion in the person because their body shows signs of it. Today’s class also talked about how stress can actually be life threatening. If stress is not dealed with properly it can actually lead to heart disease, and eventually lead to death. In class it was said that stress actually plays a role in 50-70% of illnesses. The reason for this is that stress causes the immune system to be less affective. This class was very interesting to me because there have been several times in the last month that stress has had an affect on my day to day life. For instance right now I am feeling very stressed because I have an eight page paper due by Friday for my other psychology class. This weekend some of the stress caught up to me, and I ended up having the twenty four hour flu bug.
