...innocent, he was found guilty. All this led up to murder of Tom Robinson, which is where the theme of losing battles enters the scene. A battle that should have never been fought was lost. Tom lost his battle, and it cost him his life, but it opened the eyes of another. Jem Finch, a young boy, is another “mocking bird.” Jem was not accused of a crime, and he did not lose his life, but he suffered behind the hatred and prejudice of others. Jem is growing up with the conception that there are good people, and there are bad people. This soon changes when he views the Tom Robinson case and comes to the reality that even innocent people are convicted as guilty. With this new knowledge, he becomes doubtful, questioning justice and coming to the conclusion that there is no real justice, especially with racism. The social segregation and pre-judging of Tom’s jury just because he is a black man caused Jem to see the injustice that lurked around him. Another example of how this innocent child was harmed for doing absolutely nothing wrong would be how Bob Ewell attacked Jem and his sister after a Halloween pageant as revenge for Atticus defending Tom Robinson. Jem did nothing wrong, but ended up with broken bones and a shattered view of true justice. Of all the “mocking birds” in this novel, the most important seems to be the notorious Boo Radley. Serving as a mysterious character to the imaginations of the Macomb children, Boo is segregated from the community and judged by what tales and stories tell of the daunting Boo. After being locked into home arrest as a teenager, Boo was locked in his home by his father and only came out at night, feeding only more mischief to the rumors of this Boo Radley. Boo has always been feared, and imagined as an ugly, horrific ravaging human even though very few people really know the truth about Arthur “Boo” Radley. He is another perfect example of a symbolic “mocking bird” harmed by culture for absolutely nothing at all.
