There are four different types of lightning that directly affect objects on the earth's surface. One main type is Negative Lightning. This includes the following: Cloud-to-ground Positive, Cloud-to-ground Negative, Ground-to-cloud Positive, and Ground-to-cloud. Negative lightning is a Lightning strike from a negative cloud, down to the positively charged ground. There are another three types of lightning strikes which are very similar to the one above. One thing that scientist do know is that lightning is caused by electricity. One way they have found is that lightning can form with just ice, water and a cloud. Lightning occurs when the ice and water collide with a cloud. Both the clouds and the ice have a charge. Light weight particles, like water, float to the top of the cloud.
