... new technology revolutionized communications by enabling computers around the world to interconnect. When considering the role that language plays in our daily life and our relationship with other people, we realize how indispensable it is for normal human interaction. As a result, the Internet has become an important aspect in the lives of people around the world and it is evident that its popularity is growing at a fast rate. A positive aspect of the Internet is its most widely used application: the electronic mail (e-mail), which “has practically replaced the Postal Service for short written transactions.” With this attribute, people are able to communicate efficiently at a faster pace. The Internet can also contribute to the expansion of our knowledge or to a paradigm change, since it provides us with an enormous variety of information. It also permits various individuals to gain acceptance from people they are not acquainted with and to publicize their beliefs or ideas to the world. The impact of new technologies can be predicted through extensive research where certain factors influence the performance in a person’s researching skills. Factors such as moral issue are sometimes involved within the investigation and testing of hypotheses. Several times, the person might not arrive to the correct conclusion since certain moral issues set a boundary between what is right and wrong, thus certain testing can not be conducted. An example of this is the impact of cloning, which several people will not dare investigate since it is against their morals. Thus, when predicting that the impact of cloning will be a negative one, it is based more on the paradigms they have then the actual reality. Predictions are made through scientific testing or relating the actual event with incidents that occurred in the past. For example, when stating that computers are going to dominate the world and replace human labor in a number of years is a reasonable theory, since this can relate to the impact that the cotton gin, trains and other objects had on society in the past. The predictions presented will never have the consent of every person since it is impossible for people to share identical principles and a similar comprehension of ideas or facts. Humans attempt to give different explanations due to the necessity of satisfying our minds to have an understanding of where we stand in the world. As a result, several predictions may be considered reliable while others may not. Prior knowledge is required when creating an appropriate prediction, since the more enhanced your knowledge of the area is the better quality it maintains. When someone is unfamiliar with a certain topic, they are limited when providing an explanation, which is why a prediction that is based on a generalization is not considered reliable since it lacks validity and is ambiguous. There are several cases where different people might be able to explain a certain subject adequately. It is obvious that a prediction is acceptable if it resembles logical thinking and this requires help from a prior knowledge of the subject. Various people state that religion influences the outcome of ideas and the determination of its reliability. On numerous occasions, ethics tends to restrict the portraying of a high quality prediction. Is it possible to obtain a reasonable prediction even if it is affected by ethics? Society would only accept and classify it as reliable if they can relate to the religious issues. A prediction based on religion is controversial since sometimes other religions do not recognize it. Humans use “basic laws of logic in attempt to achieve consistency in [their] thought.” At the same time, we are capable of applying our emotions in our predictions. Sometimes predictions might be classified as reliable since the issue concerns value judgements, where comprehension is earned through a person’s personal opinion. New technology such as cloning can be economically promising and can prevent death, but at the same time it can be “philosophically unsettling.” On the other hand, the Internet addiction can lead to severe depression or to the development of new and clever ideas. Thus, this innovation is considered to have negative and positive aspects. Clearly, a background of the prediction being explained creates a reliable explanation, which can be classified as appropriate. In terms of other things such as value judgements and religion, a reliable prediction is determined by one’s own ideals and they are not to be questioned by others. The negative aspect of new technology can be observed in the psycho physiological disorder of Internet addiction involving tolerance, affective disturbances, interruption of relationships and withdrawal symptoms. While people expand their horizons electronically, the World Wide Web absorbs them and this rapidly becomes a contributing factor in the disintegration of their lives and the depressive state they might go into. Internet addiction continues to increase, since humanity has a thirst toward knowledge. “The gods did not reveal, from the beginning, all the things to us, but in the course of time, through seeking we may learn and know things better.” An example of this is seen through an Internet addict, who stated that: “I don’t even help [my children] with their homework in the evening because I’m in the Internet gathering information, and I don’t help put them to bed because I don’t realize how late it is. And I just can’t stop myself.” It is evident that people are not using one of the most important sources of knowledge, perception in order to sense that they are becoming unhealthy.
