Upon moving, he saw that other factories were not upholding the quality of their workers and those children were mistreated in factories. In 1816, with his four brothers, Fielden went to England’s Parliament and presented them with a petition to protect the children in factories. The petition pushed for Parliament to start debating if legislation was necessary to protect children’s maximum working hours in factories and the regulations needed for the children there in the factory. Fielden, who was very religious, sought a way to incorporate his business idea’s about the nation’s workers and his religion. Then in 1822, John Fielden founded the Todmorden Unitarian Society. This society was active with promoting social reform with religious framework. In the 1820s, the British revolution slowed and there was less need of workers in the textile industry. As a result, the workers wages started to fall. Fielden, recognizing the situation, fought for a quality of life for the working class that was not, at that point, ever heard of.
