Comparison of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth

He immediately regrets his decision, and hates himself for his actions. This self-hatred eventually acts negatively on him, giving him a somewhat maniacal personality at the end of the play. As soon as he kills the king, Macbeth is full of remorse. He also loses any sense of proportion he had; after this terrible deed other killings become easy- even the murder of a friend (Banquo), a woman (Lady Macduff), and children (Fleance and the Macduff boys). Although Macbeth pretends to know nothing of the murder, he is probably sincere when he says, “Had I but died an hour before this / chance, / I had lived a blessed time”(2.3.92-93). Basically, he would rather have died than have committed the crimes of his friends’ murders. He means what he says when he states that “There's nothing serious in mortality; / All is but toys”(2.3.94-95). He hates life and longs for the past. At the beginning of the scene, Lady Macbeth is nervous and agitated. She hears a noise, making her jump, and questions if the deed had been done or not. Her character changes after Macbeth arrives; she regains her composure. Lady Macbeth becomes ruthless and dominant, controlling Macbeth and influencing his actions. She tells Macbeth to "Consider it not so deeply" when he tells her about not being able to say 'amen'(2.2.29). She is also extremely dominant when she realizes Macbeth has brought the daggers back instead of placing them in the servants' hands. She says, "Go carry them, and smear / the sleepy grooms with blood"(2.2.48-49). Macbeth replies, "I'll go no more. / I am afraid to see what I have done; / Look on't again I dare not"(2.2.49-51). She replies back, "Infirm of purpose! / Give me the daggers. The sleeping and the dead / Are but as pictures"(2.2.51-53). She takes it upon herself to make sure they are...
