The only women mentioned was Grendel’s mother who was portrayed as, “Grendel’s Mighty mother, the she-wolf.”(Beowulf 570) Women had children, made clothes and took care of the house. They were nothing more than slaves. When a woman was asked for hand in marriage the man paid her money or land. They were basically bought. During this time if she wanted to divorce she would not be able to. The men had alright control. Also during the Middle Ages they were not able to perform in plays. I believe that most men thought that they were not important enough to be portrayed in literature. Women did not read or write so they never wrote any literature in the middle Ages. Men were the only ones aloud to attend school to learn to read and write. They were thought of just as a steady hand is what I believe. Some women did have great futures and lives. If women were born into a powerful family she did not need anyone else’s consent to own and give estates or rings. Many of the will from Anglo-Saxon England were made by them and several of them were husband and wives jointed. Some place names could have suggested that they could have owned and or even managed their own estates. Women from wealthy families were well educated and literate many of them owned libraries. Many of the women in Anglo-Saxon England were well of with wealth, power, culture, and education.
