...ertisement really wants for you to vote for is how you go out and party. The big stamp “The Party Without the Politics” plays the word also. It even has a star in it, representing free-dom. The advertisement insinuates it is more Ameri-can to go out and party with Captain Morgan than with anything else. The advertisement is paid for by americans4abetterparty.org I went to this site and it had some very interesting facts. There actu-ally is a Captain Henry Morgan running for presi-dent. He is running on an official platform for “Americans for a Better Party.” A link where people can find out how to help the Captain in his race actually suggests to go to a local bar or pub and buy your friends a round of Captain Morgan. The Captain Morgan Rum Co. has actually went to quite an extent to make this as legal of a campaign as Bush’s or Kerry’s. The over all affect on the lan-guage of this advertisement also suggests it is pa-triotic to drink Captain Morgan. This advertisement was legally intended to ap-peal to any American over the drinking age, how-ever, I assume the creators of the advertisement also direct it at any American who drinks or par-ties, regardless of age. This advertisement appeared in Maxim magazine, which is mostly read by males age 16-25. The advertisement appears in the front of the magazine’s table of contents, so most read-ers will see it. The advertisement appeals to the reader’s patriotic emotion which can be very strong, especially after September 11th. The advertisement exploits the American right to vote in order to sell it product. It takes the basic principal of a democratic system and uses that to encourage drink-ing Captain Morgan’s spiced rum. Indirectly, the ad also affects every American and encourages people to vote. This is a mockery of our political system. The advertisement can be very entertaining too. The advertisement has a humorous note at the top saying “It’s a sign that the party always comes first.” Then, in parentheses under the quote it says “Seriously, it’s a sign. Tear it out and post it prominently.” They don’t want you do look at this as this page as an ad, but as a poster to hang up proudly. “In spite of the fact that we are surrounded by more advertising than ever before, most of us still ridicule the idea that we might be personally influenced by it” (Kilbourne 78). As I showed the ad to my roommate, he commented on how we need to not only hang this sign up, but we need to go get more alcohol banners and hang them up. It also reminded him that he had a Bud-weiser banner in his trunk. Needless to say, he now has a Budweiser banner hanging from his bunk. The advertisement sells the image rather than the product. It is hard to sell the product based on truth. The truth is drinking alcohol can lead to many problems like cirrhosis of the liver, im-paired judgment, and inability to safely do many everyday tasks like driving. “Almost all tobacco and alcohol ads are entirely image based” (Kilbourn 83). Even the warning label uses words usually associated with campaigning, liberal and conservative. “Liberal with the Cola, Conservati...
