...almost always dressed in a provocative way. The other thing that strikes me is all of the advertisements deal with food and automobiles as if this were the only thing men think of. It really bothers me that this magazine seems to represent men as the only sports figures there are. Women of all ages enjoy and play sports and are very good. The next magazine Better Homes and Gardens I knew was geared more toward women so it didn’t surprise me. This magazine shows a lot of ads with decorating ideas, one that strikes me is a bedroom, why can’t it be masculine instead of feminine. It also shows men in some of the ads almost clueless especially when they show kitchen ads. Women are always portrayed as the masters of the kitchen. There are a lot of men in this world that love to cook and decorate too. The other pattern that I am picking out is that men are always in the ads for computers, TVs, and automobiles. It is almost like women don’t have a clue about these products, and why are the women always cleaning, are we born with a vacuum in our hands. Another thing that disturbs me is the ads geared toward dieting which always have women in them. The ad Got milk states if you drink 24 ounces in 24 hours you will lose weight, and of course there is a pencil thin woman in the ad. All of the food ads of course show the amount of carbs and fat content for the food. Not all of us women think about that all of the time some of us are not that shallow. Time magazine was one that surprised me I thought it would be more for everyone but it wasn’t. In this issue the major articles are on the war in Iraq. What really strikes me as funny is that most of the articles on the war portray the men as our military force fighting the war. Where are the articles showing our US women fighting right beside them? The only place I see women in these articles show women from Iraq being protected by the men. This magazine is definitely a man’s magazine 8 out of 10 ads show men’s products i.e. electric razors, skoal, automobiles. There are many women fighting over there I wish they would be portrayed as brave and strong along with their male counterparts. The next magazine New York Times Magazine Year in Ideas Special Issue was a surprise to me it was well balanced for both men and women. I found that the ads are not as gender biased as the other magazines. I did find one ad that had a man advertising for banana republic that put him in a provocative pose in the bedroom it was refreshing. Why can’t advertising be just that instead of using sex to sell everything? One thing that I have found in every magazine so far as in this one is that automobile ads, investment, computer and television ads are all geared toward men. The women are still in the kitchen will we ever be thought of as an equal. The New York Times Magazine regular issue proved that this magazine is the same as all of the others it is still geared toward men. I guess women only get recognition around the holidays. The ads were back to the same old stuff, i.e. the women are back in the kitchen, cleaning, and taking care of the kids. One thing else I haven’t mentioned is when a women is in an ad she is usually dealing with children, ADHD, new fangled toys for kids. The ads abou...
