He’s going to do what he thinks is right and that’s all. (p.449) “ My dear Criton, I only wish the many could do the greatest mischief, so that they could also do the greatest good! That would be well indeed. As it is, they can do neither; for they cannot make a man either wise or foolish; they do things quite at random.” Socrates must face the two paths that are set in front of him. His choices are either to carry out his judgment and go on to drink the poison (hemlock). The other choice is to escape jail and leave the Abuzir –2- Country. There are many pros and cons to these choices, if he carries out the verdict that has been given to him he will die and the world will have lost a great and powerful mind. Then again he would have died standing up for what he believed in. He would leave his wife with no husband and his children with no father. Nonetheless, later on they would have realized they have made an immense mistake and have much regret about it. If he escapes jail and abandons his responsibilities he will be left with his life. On the other hand he will be called a coward forever and have to leave his home and family. Either choice he makes has dire consequences. He must choose wisely and stand up for what he believes in. He chooses to stay in jail and carry out the condemnation that has been set upon him. In my opinion I absolutely agree with the decision he made. I agree with him because if he did leave he would have been going against everything he has ever believed in and preached to other people about. If he had choose to leave and not carry out his conviction than he would have undoubtedly pleased “The Many.” That is exactly what they wanted him to do, to show other people that he was wrong and he was just talking for the sake of talking.
