Subtle Corruption
...nd of some rap number? One can't count the number of replicas that reach the big screen including bloody homicides and gut spilling. Yet, at the same time, it's always possible to hear someone label them "cliché." Americans can sit through entire films including such events without even so much as flinching at a murder scene. When this media travels overseas and reaches foreign eyes that haven't been pounded with such numbing ferocity, they begin to create an opinion of our culture that isn't entirely one hundred percent true. While Americans may have a sick obsession with the grotesque, we do not necessarily live the lives portrayed on the big screen. Many other peoples are prone to believe otherwise. With the amount of crime and negative imagery we export, it is no wonder other cultures are led to believe our streets are cluttered to the brim with broken laws. “For many years, so-called action movies have traveled more effectively than other genres, since explosions and car crashes do not require translation.”(Medved, 772) To a person with no other sources to view how we behave, we must appear almost barbaric. It won’t be long before cultures feel the same numbness towards violence that we so inadvertently possess. At the rate our media is going, we will soon see a downward spiral in our entertainment industry. I imagine, within the next couple of decades, our media will become a great number of times more vulgar; it would have to, as our culture will demand it. Without more thrilling and cutting edge entertainment, we would all get bored. If that happens, Hollywood’s economic triumph over America will teeter. While a number of people choose to dislike us for the products we present, there is also a large percentile of the global populace that loves us for it; many cultures are becoming infatuated with American culture. We influence a growing number of peoples with our pop culture and loose way of life. The young people of other countries are slowly falling prey to our dangerous routine. They cannot get enough of our movies and clothing. While we move from one fad to the next in our media driven society, they strive to keep up with our pace. "It is a quality of immediacy and ...
