Bush Embarks on Ambitious Social Welfare Reform

In the article, the president stated that “For younger workers, the social security system has serious problems that will grow worse with time. “The relevance or the importance of this issue is that the social welfare system not only is going to change, but that we must understand that this change has to come about, based on historical facts. The Social security system was created decades ago for a very different era. Unfortunately or fortunately in the past, people did not live as long. Benefits were much lower than they are today. Unfortunately it is sad felt that the founders of social security could not have foreseen how our society would change. We are living longer and therefore drawing benefits longer and those benefits are scheduled to rise dramatically over the next few decades. Knowledge The knowledge I took away from this article is that the concerns for social welfare is not something we can take lightly. It has made me realize that putting for the effort to better my education and establish my own “nest egg” is necessary for my survival once I reach retirement age. Social Security sends statement regarding the eligibility of American, and if I had to retire today I would not be able to live on the amount of money I would receive. The sadness I take from this information is that we as a people and one of the richest countries in the world may not even be able to take care of our elderly is very frightening. It is very disconcerting to know that our president is trying to push through reforms that want to get rid of a system instead of improving upon it, especially when given the knowledge that we have. I hope what ever the agenda is the outcome is in favor of the people. We should not have to worry after being a positive part of the social economic structure, wonder if we will be able to survive in our old age.
