When his father is telling Artie about the time he was born, he tells him that they had to break his arm in order to take him out of his mother’s belly and when it healed they used to make fun of Artie because his arm would jump up as if he was saluting Hitler and they would always have to put his arm back down. As his father showed him the motion he made as a little boy, right when he lowered his arm down, he knocked over his pills and told Artie it was his fault. Artie told him that he would re-count them for him, but his father refused his help and told him he did not know anything about counting pills, besides he said, “ I’m an expert for this.” This is one of the problems that are affecting the relationship between father and son because it shows that he was very disciplined when it came to dealing with personal issues. He wanted to make sure that he was the one dealing with the consequences of knocking over the pills, not his son. Another problem that’s affecting the relationship between Vladek and his son is where Francoise, Artie’s wife, is driving with Artie and his dad back to Vladek’s house from buying groceries and on their way back they pick up a hitchhiker.
