...and even the non-poor are dependant on untreated supplies of water from rivers and streams for all of their water. As a result of these conditions medical attention within the country is limited and severe injuries and illnesses often go untreated due to the prohibitive cost of having to go out of country. Within the country, overextended doctors and nurses often find themselves without the equipment, medicine, and especially the staff support necessary to properly care for their patients. ProWorld Service Corps is an international, non-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting social and economic development in third world countries. Focused mainly in Belize and Peru, they have constructed numerous schools, installed drinking water systems, built irrigation networks, and provided holistic support for poverty-stricken areas. However, the ProWorld organization relies on volunteers to contribute time and resources to help them succeed. I would like to do my part by working in a medical clinic or on a construction site building an elementary school. My medically-related experiences mean that when I arrive in Belize, I won’t just be filing paperwork or washing laundry. I will really be able to contribute!! Being a college student, I do not have the resources available to cover the cost of my participation in this program, which go towards in-country housing and food, supplies for the projects, and to continue the ongoing development within Belize.
