It was the incident where he sleeps with Mrs. Dempster that caused a dramatic change in his life. Joel changed his life around and became a priest. He helped less fortunate people in Toronto find hope by providing them with shelter based on donations. After speaking to the school Dunstan teaches at Dunstan realizes that Joel is the tramp who had slept with Mrs. Dempster. The illusion behind this is that he used to be angry and unhappy until someone had changed his life. Although he comes across as a changed man he still uses the public to profit for himself. “Perhaps it is. But you’re not the first man I’ve used like that, and I promise you won’t be the last. God has to be served, and I must use the means I know. If I’m not false to God- and I try very hard not to be- I don’t worry too much about the occasional stranger” (Davies pg 132) This meaning he has not learned from his past mistakes and that it still lingers in his new life. This is false because in reality other characters see him as a changed person. Leola Cruikshank, a woman who married Boy Staunton also avoided revealing the truth to protect the marriage that ended with her death. It wasn’t long after Boy and her got married that she found out he was having an affair. “She discovered that he was having affairs with other woman.” (Davies pg 185) After this occurrence Leola turned to Dunstan, whom she had known most of her life and had once had strong feelings for, for love.
