The 1950’s enabled her to take certain traits from the men of the times. As they were largely influenced by the movie stars, she was able to take the stances and postures from them, for example slouching and placing her hands in her pockets, and incorporate it into her performance. She envisioned that her body was set lower, so seemed as if she had a permanent slouch. Women tend to move from the hips as men use their whole bodies; with this she was able to achieve a manly posture when standing or walking. Also pitching her voice lower enabled her to deliver her lines so to seem as if she were a man. In Shakespearean times, women were not allowed to be performers, they were considered only to be housewives, so the men played each and every character including the female parts. Female parts were written for young male actors or boys (whose voices had not broken yet), so Shakespeare didn’t often write big roles for them or keep them actively engaged ...
