Pro Prayer in School
... courses have a short period of time at the beginning of class where they reflect in a journal that is counted for a percentage of their grade.” It seems like they have a way around every angle a person can argue prayer in school. The way Father Doyle felt about the subject at hand and the way he spoke about it just jumpstarted my investigation and made the issue of prayer in school more important. New York Wired Group, The. 2000. “School Prayer.” 15 Feb. 2004. http://www.newyorkwired.com/eduprayer.htm This website argues both sides, pro and con, on prayer in school. I really didn’t enjoy the site because it wasn’t easy to access and scan through. Although my difficulty with the site, it did contain some pretty good information. The resource was unbiased and gave both perspectives on the issue at hand. Prayer in school is a widely debated topic, but I have never seen it debated like it was on this site. Orihuela, Valerie. Telephone. 16 Feb. 2004. This is a telephone interview I had with my mother because she used to be a principal and now is a director of administration for Hillsborough county schools. I felt this would be perfect to get a point of view from someone involved in public schools. She was unbiased to what she felt and explained to me how the state feels about prayer in school. This interview is very important because it contrasted to my interview with Father Doyle and how the private schools feel. “Prayer.” New Advent. 1911. 15 Feb. 2004. www.newadvent.org/cathen/12345b.htm This is a website that simply explains the definition of prayer. You can’t take it for granted that your audience knows exactly what prayer is so this website turns out to be one of my most important resources. When explaining your side of an argument you need to give a strong credible definition of the words that your argument is based upon and I relied on this website to just so. “Prayer In School.” Legal Guidelines. 2002-2004. 15 Feb. 2004. http://www.prayer-in-school.com This is a website that states all the legal rulings to certain cases of prayer in school. This is a website that can really help my argument due to the fact that it states the legal guidelines to certain issues of prayer in school and not the rulings that some organizations that aren’t very credible give. “Students may organize prayer groups, religious clubs, and "see you at the pole" gatherings before school to the same extent that students are permitted to organize other non-curricular student activities groups. Such groups must be given the same access to school facilities for assembling as is given to other non-curricular groups, without discrimination because of the religious content of their expression.” That quote was a ruling given on the issue of organized prayer groups and activities. As you can see they are fair with everything and they is no bias towards any group. That is why this site is so effective and when the reader reads these quotes they see that every step taken in the process is the right one. This next quote is taken from the argument of having moments of silence in school, “If a school has a "minute of silence" or other quiet periods during the school day, students are free to pray silently, or not to pray, during these periods of time. Teachers and other school employees may neither encourage nor discourage students from praying during such time periods.” As you can see for yourself the audience will absolutely respect everything that is said because of how fair and how these rulings come from a legal point of view instead of some small survey or discussion that could be altered in some way. With this site I plan to bring out the strong suits of the case and prove with the legal rulings instead of some survey. “Pro School Prayer Position.” School “Prayer Community at War.” 1999. 15 Feb. 2004 http://www.schoolprayer.com/eduguide/positions.html This is an amazing website that explains both sides of the argument in depth. Prayer in school is discussed strongly in four different categories; constitutional or unconstitutional, morality, free exercise clause, and religion in government. “Since the banning of organized prayer in public schools, the nation has been in steady moral decline. Divorce rates, teen pregnancy, violent crime, and drug use have all increased.” This is an important quote from the pro side regarding morality, and the way it states how morality is in steady decline will have a strong effect on the reader.
