Masters program Essay of Intent
...ne. After achieving a wealth of experience through past leadership roles , the study of Gerontology and Program Planning, and working in the Long Term Care sector, I have decided the next logical step for my career is to develop the skills enabling me to teach others about health issues. I also believe that while I do possess excellent leadership qualities, to manage people effectively skills are needed to continually inspire staff and peers. Managing a team in the community services or Long Term Care sector is another challenge I hope to one day take on, and I believe that knowledge of Adult Education plays an enormous role in outstanding management. Looking back, I am proud of the many successes I have enjoyed, both extracurricular and professional. I have always found myself in leadership roles, going as far back as high school – I was always visible on councils and committees within the student body. University was no different, as I served on the Lady Dunn Hall house committee at UNB for 2 years, one of those years in a Vice –President position and subsequently coordinating the major house fundraiser for Breast Cancer research in February 2000. I was also a Proctor at UNB for the 2000-2001 academic year, a much sought after leadership position within their residence community. I’ve continued to be placed in leadership roles, including being invited to manage a busy London café after only having worked there a short time, and despite having no formal training in the food service industry. Specifically since starting my career in Ontario, I have gained much experience in the health care sector and grown considerably in my role at Belmont House, a long term care facility, through my work as an Activation Coordinator. I moved from a summer student position to a permanent part time staff member while finishing my program at George Brown College, until finally in February of 2004 a full – time position was created and offered to me immediately. I have developed a knack for new creative programming, and in keeping the interest of the groups and individuals I work with. I have also supervised volunteers and placement students, and in doing so have successfully fostered long term commitments from many to continue their work at Belmont House. I have acquired organizational and time management skills through monthly charting responsibilities, evaluations, meeting monthly deadlines for calendar publication and playing an active role in assessments and care plan development for our residents. Also, Belmont House demands a level of professionalism and excellence that is second to no other organization in the Toronto area, and I am fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to model my work ethic and commitment from their model of high expectancy. I plan to take my past experience and invaluable training with me in future roles, either team management or public education, and ultimately increase the quality of life for the elderly population or those suffering from chronic disease and dementia. Achieving an MEd in Adult Education will not only provide me with the skills to excel on this path, but it will ensure that I am trained to lead others in doing the same. Over the next five years I would love to have the opportunity to work in my chosen field in a leadership role, and to return to the east coast. My research and consideration has shown me t...
