To explain this book properly, I must first describe the time in which it was written. Soseki wrote Kokoro in 1914, as the Meji era had just reached its end. The ending of the Meji into the Taisho era is a very important point in the novel. The book tells a story of a relationship between a college student “I” and an older retired professor “Sensei”. Sensei is hopelessly unable to cope with the new era’s focus on the self and, is in turn, isolated in his own world that seems to exclusively include his wife and the main character “I”. The reader is giving hints throughout the beginning of the book that Sensei is hiding something. But, we are not told his secret until fairly late in the book through a lengthy letter from Sensei to the narrator.
