...e world gives us all the wrong signals. In reality, according to Thoreau, we should not pay attention to detail; people should live a life with patience and meaning. Thoreau states there is a big difference about the appearance the society wants people to have, and the main reality of the simple world. The appearance of the world is how we live, the things we do, and the direction we are going. We believe in a life of everlasting acceleration, and competition. The making of new gadgets, roads, and buildings making it seem that there is a lot of work to be done and new jobs to do, new news to write, and friends to talk to. Thoreau says that “let your affairs be as two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand; instead of a million count half a dozen, and keep your accounts on your thumb nail” (Thoreau 882). In reality we cannot keep up with the many tasks of the world, we have to simplify. According to Thoreau, the reality of the world is the technology of the world is not necessary for us to live. We need to take time and spend time for ourselves, and for example walk to places instead of riding the railroad track. We also need to mind our own business, because people do not need to know the gossip of society. We do not need to depend on commerce and trade, we depend on each other to give each other the thing we need to survive; the bare necessities. The simple life is reality, and the appearance of society may not always be right. According to Thoreau, “… we live meanly, like ants;…” (Thoreau 882). This quote emphasizes Thoreau views on people and society which we people live with no honor, we simply live to work and try to fit in with society. People simply do the normal routine day after day, never changing it up and always listening to the unwritten rules of the world. Thoreau views are different; he believes that we shouldn’t listen to the unwritten rules of society. For example he writes “instead of three meals a day, if it be necessary eat but one;” ( Thoreau 882). This quote illustrates that we the people follow the rules of the society, if society says to eat three meals is must be right, but in reality we may only need to eat once a day if we are not hungry. Thoreau wants us to live for ourselves and not for society.
