...ately needs assistance. Cole and his friend, Rawlins, give him food and allow him to ride into Mexico with them. Not only ill-prepared to travel, Blevins causes himself further turmoil and again calls on the decency of Cole. Rawlins is fearful that this could be “the dumb thing” they do that perhaps they should leave Blevins to his own resolve. Cole refuses, realizing “the fix he is in”. Even though Blevins does not seem to think things through including the effect of his actions on others, two examples of inhumanity involve unjustly harming him. The first is his arrest when the Mexican police beat his feet so badly, he cannot walk or stand. They refuse him any medical attention for his injuries. The second involves his death. Without a trial, they lie to him and tell him he is going to a penitentiary. Instead the captain and a man drag him to an open field and shoot him while Cole is forced to watch. The brother of the man Blevins is accused of killing is given the opportunity for vengeance and to shoot him, but at the end, he could not do it. Unfortunately, this humane act doesn’t save Blevins, because the captain shoots him and gloats about it to Cole later. Cole commits a final act of mercy when he does not kill the captain.
